'68 TH400-need help

I got a guy who i can get a 400 tranny from that came out of a 68 corvette-its been sitting for 4 yrs and he said it worked fine before-he did recommend a rebuild but said it had "all the good stuff" any input out there? Does come with stall converter.

I've heard this from amateur engine builders many many times. Usually they would not know good stuff if it was hanging from a nut hair. This is a shot in the dark. YOu might get it opened up and find a jewel... or it might be a total POS. BUT - If you are rebuilding anyway, I guess it's worth a shot. If it appears solid and comes with a stall converter, it might be a jewel!

Chances that it actually came from a Corvette are slim... but that doesn't matter anyway. They used basically the same trans as other GM models.

I hear ya-so there really isnt nothing special about it if it did come from a vet? He said the vet was his???Does anything happen to trannys from just sitting? Seals go bad or anything?-I was just kinda thinking drain the fluids and run it to the rebuild-unless i can ever get ahold of that working man Hot Rod-Where art thou o Hot Rod???

Input shaft and tail shaft seals. If it has fluid in it now, that's a good thing. You could install it, replace the fluid and give it a shot.

If I remember right, late 60s (like 68-69) Corvette might have had a slightly lower first gear... but I haven't been involved with those is a long time. The TH400 was used all the way back to 64.

If i do and it breaks its always rebuildable right? No part of it can't be rebuilt is there?

Well. If it really has a stall verter... you are going to be hammering the crap out of it with a big block torque wise. You'll know what it;s made of quickly. You can destroy a trans. They are not always rebuildable.
