Iv got a question-hopefully someone has a answer-On my 66 iv got it started and i'm not sure if it's got 6 volts or 12 -it should have 12-but when i start it it makes a noise like waterpump is bad or like a piston is dragging-it's not real bad-and iv replaced the water pump-BUT after a few min it shuts off and act like the batt is not hooked up yet got lights-then after a few min. it will start and do the same thing---could i only have 6 volts running it and that's what's causing it?There is no other thing that i know of and hotrod mention about the volt reg. but i havent got ahold of a volt meter yet.-Any idea?

Quickest way I know of to help is put a voltmeter on the positive terminal of the alternator and the negative lead to ground and read the voltage.

Ok thanks---would you think maybe if i was only getting 6volts that it would run kinda funny-maybe not all cyclinders fire-maybe shut trk off ?-If i'm getting 6 volts then what?replace volt reg.? My alt is a reg. alt. but i think the trk has the orginal 6 volt set up -i took a pic of the volt reg. it's in my profile pics.:frustration:

It's possible. If the truck is still set up for 6 volt then I would convert the thing over to 12.

Yes and lights and a few other items, Honestly I would think that a 66 is already 12 volt though. But I could be wrong.
