How are these trucks? I'm looking at a 2000 model with a v6. Im gonna sound like an idiot but at this point I don't even know how to put one from two wheel to four wheel drive. Do you have I get out and turn shit like older trucks? Anyone ever own one that can fill me in?

Most S10s were pretty stout trucks and I think all you have to do to get it in 4x4 is move the lever on the floor or hit the button, depending on the how far up the option chain it is.

^^ This

Pretty solidly built little trucks but not very good for serious off roading due to their seriously low ground clearance (unless you do a lot of mods).

I had a '98 ZR2 and it was a good truck while I had it. It was the very first truck I ordered towards the end of high school.

The '96+ 4.3 is junk and likes to spin bearings. My Blazer spun one at 123k and a month after putting a junkyard motor in it the tranny started slipping on hills and blowing out fluid. Then the heater core popped while looking for a new car.

Most are push button 4wd (on dash). Thats what my brother's '95 and my '96 Blazer had. Some of the base models had a floor shift though.

The 4wd actuator on the front axle went bad on my brother's truck so the 4wd didnt work. He traded the truck in with it being bad.

Check for rust at the floor/firewall seam. My brother's floor kept getting wet on the passenger side and we found out why after pulling up the carpet- the seam rotted out.

If the truck has over 100k plan on replacing all the ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, pitman arm, etc.

Ive owned two S10s and a Blazer and my brother had an S10 and we had to replace all those parts around 100k.

I drove an '02 S10 for five years before I retired(company bought it new)and was a very good little truck. With the 4.3 it would scoot pretty damn well....even loaded with glass.I wouldn't mind having a 4x4 for myself

I had a 93 GMC Sonoma which is the S-10 brother. It was a regular cab 4x4 5sp with the 4.3. Had plenty of power and did well for regular off road driving. It got 18mpg for the most part. Solid little truck that has 130k on it when I traded it in on my 02. No issues other than an oil leak on on of the remote oil filter lines. The remote oil filter was stock not an add on. Oh and the starter went out at 30k and was replaced under warranty.

I'm no stranger to the s10, 2.2 or 4.3. Just a little curious about the 4x4 capabilities and common problems. Thanks for the replies. Cross your fingers for me. All goes well ill buy another truck today.
