I'm looking at a 95 Beretta with the 3100 in it for a beater car. It has just over 100k miles. Are there any major problems with this engine. I've read some issues with intake manifold gaskets but thats about it.
As far as I know, intake manifold gasket is probably the biggest issue. We had a 3.1 in a Malibu, and it was a decent car other than the IMG problem. It ran strong and averaged around 27 mpg on the highway.
I had the 3.1 in a corsica, it ran decent, but we had major fuel line freeze up in winter time. Corsica and Beretta are same only one is two and one is four door.
The 3100 is a modernized version of the old 2.8 V6. It's a pretty solid piece. I see a ton of them approaching 200K in the car business at auction. GM does a pretty good job of making their cars run a long time... but you have to keep a box in the truck for all of the trim and switchgear that falls off.
The lifters tick alot on the 3100. I sold my dad a '97 Cutlass Supreme with 56k and the lifters ticked the whole time he owned it and never caused a problem.
He sold the car with 89k when it started overheating, possibly a bad head gasket.
He had to replace the intake gasket due to losing coolant somewhere around 60k.
