Iv got a 350 block(stock) and 305 heads 14014416( Ho 1980-85 58cc 1.84-1.5 165/59cc ports 7 bolt exhaust) Thinking of putting this togather with some thicker head gaskets and putting on a double roller with it set at 4 degrees retard and just go with stock settings on timing. Any input out there on this?

305 heads on a 350 makes good compression
Yea i was thinking it have 10.5 to 1 but was concerned bout it blowing a hole in the piston by the timing issue but thought if i retard the timing by the timing chain and just set timing at stock settings that maybe id be safe and have no probles? Any input...

305 were thin cast heads, make sure you are not wasting your time, on a set of cracked heads...my two pennies....

The heads are good had them on another engine that engine had low compression pistons in it and bored 30 over and ran great. Im finding on sites that if i got a stock 350 chevy(8:1) putting on the 305 heads will just raise it up to (9:2 to 1) does that sound about right to ya...omg-lol i have 3 projects going on and love it-lol...the 70 c10 with the 400tranny put in that i'll have a 454 in front of. ..a 78 chevy monza stepchild...and this one 75gmc 3/4ton. The 350 engine has 4 relief vavles-these 305 heads had been sitting for over a year and lately iv been soaking them with tranny fluid and washing them at the local car wash then resoaking with tranny fluid.-these 305 heads are the good kind-im just going to get new valve guides and clean them up and throwing on-and see what happens-not sure how to mock them and check for cleanence-i wont speed much more than 200-250 on the whole thing being installed-engine on the stand to.

They actually made some vortec 305 for a while. If you can find some of those head that would be better.
You should have valve to piston clearance problems because the valves are smaller on the 305 heads.
You wont have to retard the timing unless you plan to run crap fuel, if you are then dont even do it.
This was a method we use to use years ago on P.U.'s running propane.
I actually had hot rod pickup a long time ago with BB and 12.5-1 compression running on propane. Drove it to work everyday to. Was too bad on fuel either.
Propane or a E85 carburator would be the best rout.

I wasnt wanting to make this a hot rod...-just kinda going with what i got. These 305 heads are probably a step down from those vortec ones u mentioned but among the regular 305 heads these are suppose to among the best of 305 heads they are HIGH OUTPUT 1980-85(actually they are 83) 58cc 1.84-1.5 165/59cc ports. And if my info i got from a site is right it make that 8:1 to 9.25:1 and as long as im 10:1 or less it aught to be good-im going to get a pic of the heads and post...
