VW had always been a step above the Japanese sedans. I fear that is not the case anymore.

It's not the case for some time ago. An uncle of mine has a '95 Corolla and it's way better than any Volkswagen Jetta, Polo Classic/Derby or any other Volkswagen from the same class and same year. It's even better than some newer Volkswagen sedans. Only good thing from Volkswagen are the diesels...
