I am having the same problems with the 4 wheel drive not engaging. My light comes on but the front end will not engage. I am getting the whinning sounds when trying to engage. I have read a lot about the vacuum soleniod on the passanger firewall. This would be a quick, and what I have read a fairly inexpensive trial fix without going to the ford garage and paying throw the nose. If....this doesn't work, other thoughts?

If that doesnt work check the vacuum levels on both sides and see if a line has a hole or its clogged. Also it could be your Hub Actuator ( which ford does not sell independently and tells you that you have to buy a whole hub assembly, which is bullshit ). That would be the next thing i would check. Its about an $80 part compared to the whole hub assembly. Go to tascaparts.com and search actuator for parts under your year. Its gonna be kinda hard to explain if you wanna replace it yourself but if you have tools and the knowledge to work on your truck then let me know throw a PM and ill walk you through it. i got pictures still from when i did my jeeps

Ive done mine several times and there is no difference in taking the hubs out between my jeep and my F150 i have back home. I had the same thing happen to my Truck a couple of times First few times were the solenoid and then the next time it ended up being my hub actuator because after driving it around so much when the solenoid was bad those few times it actually starting grinding the actuator inside the hub which did not keep it locked properly. Its exactly like replacing wheel bearings in our trucks. But repacing wheel bearing in our trucks require a whole new hub assembly because they are built inside the hub assembly.
