Glad you found the smoking issue. It sounds like you need to keep tweaking the carb. All good suggestions above. Just an FYI but smoking like you described is a classic valve guide seal leak if all else is fine. My 68 Impala with a 327 would smoke like crazy coming down the mountains in PA...

You can always put a an angle reader on your DS before you take the blocks out and then check it again after you remove the blocks and see what the difference is.

I've been looking at new trucks as well. As for the bed cover. I found it less expensive by $200 from Amazon than from the dealer. Easy to install.
