It may not be noticeable, but I have soaked the clutches in clean trans fluid. As good as that donor Trans looked inside, and the clutches not even being close to 50% worn, I decided to use the clutches and steels out of the donor trans. Also used the bands out of the donor. At this point I was...

OK, here we go with reassembly !!! You might notice, there are some advantages to not having a wife around. I didn't want to get the garage dirty. :) First assembly to go in the case is the planetary gears and center support. This is all assembled into a unit then carefully put in the trans...

I am thinking it should have 3 total. One to the hot side, about a 10gu wire. Then 2 more to the plug in about 14 or 16 guage wire, and those should run to the Voltage Regulater if they were tracked down.

Your ass is grass Bernie. Kid you the hell not, there is snow in the forecast here for Sat. night and Sunday and back down to 28 degrees. Today was almost 70, tommorow going to be even warmer yet, then a cold front drops down Sar. morning. Pops have the right idea, I think Mud might be able...

You wiring is going to be differant from you Monza. Your Monza has an integral voltage regulator in the alternator, you truck does not. Remember my comment up there about the External adjustable voltage rebulator??? Yes, that will be lbs on the fuel regulator dial.

    Turbo 400 Build

True with exception of a couple major components. The center support must be to the right case. The thickness of the CS has to match the case as to where the snap retaining rings lands. I forget which year makes the differance. It could be 69 and older. The newer style CS is a tad thinner making...

    Turbo 400 Build

So now I have this bare 69 Chevelle SS Turbo 400 that I paid $50 for and stripped it to a bare case, that I have gutted and kept all the good hard parts, and put what I didn't use on the shelf for stock parts. I don't need it, and someone building a #'s correct 69 Chevelle SS might be interested...

Nice SHD. It took me a minute to figure out WTH, then I noticed my quote was edited. If that were true, I am sure I'd have my pick around here. Just walk into any local McDonalds and look for the table with 3 or 4 trays of food and ONE DIET Coke, and there she'd be. But nope, speaking of Value...

    Turbo 400 Build

Again, we come across some differant style parts. The needle bearings, sometimes reffered to as Torrington Bearings are differant in both transmissions. I think its obvious by the color which ones came out of which transmission. The one that looks burnt in color is from the 86 model, and the...

    Turbo 400 Build

Moving along on the disassembly of the 69 Chevelle Donor trans. Now down to the wire and almost to a stripped case. Here are pics of the planetaries removed, and nothing left the but the rear band and the output shaft assembly. Planetaries Removed. Output shaft assembley removed...

    Turbo 400 Build

Thanks Gramps. Auto transmissions have always been fascinating to me. And the more complicated they get, the more fascinating they get. Sure glad someone appreciates the write up. Taking much more time than I had thought. And really, I am not going deep into detail, although it may appear so.

    Turbo 400 Build

Back on Track to Donor Trans Disassembly Now removal of the Center of Support. Notice the differance of the center support in the 69 Model vs the 86 model. The one on the left is from the 69 THM400 the 2 pics on the Right of the 86. Remember, the 86 center support is a little thinner than the...

The other updgade, which is a very rare hard to find part. Is the reaction carrier drum for wedge or dog bone element type one way clutch similar to a sprag. Realistically, it is not a necessary upgrade in a Turbo 400. This is what is used for 1st and Reverse. Where does something come in handy...

    Turbo 400 Build

While on the supject, of sprags and upgrades. I have found and robbed 2 pics for explanation purposes. First will be the spiral spring upgrade on the Intermediate Sprag of the Direct Drum. This spiral snap is sure not to come off and is much better at holding the sprag gear on the sprag to the...

    Turbo 400 Build

So now its time for a little pause in the build and a short lesson in the Intermediate Sprag. Here is a pic of all 3 differant Intermediate Sprags to choose from for the THM400. Notice the drum on the Left is notched to make way for the roller sprag. The roller sprag is used from 1970 and up...

No Rush Pops. I know these friggen things are time consuming as hell. But hopefully many will get good use of them. Seems you and I are the only ones do transmissions. I don't claim to be any expert either. I can do Tubro 350 and Turbo 400's blindfolded in my sleep. Still have to pay attention...

    Turbo 400 Build

Its real nice. I bought it over 20 years ago for about a $100 or a little over. I bet they are more than that now. Its very adjutable, and has the ratchet type lock down, so you can compress it, let go of it, then work your snap ring off. It also has a hole in the base, so you can put drum in...

    Turbo 400 Build

Ohhh yeah, thanks for the clarification Pops. Sure do I have a couple suggestion for that if you don't have the special tool. You are talking about a clutch spring compressor. I have one. But before I had that, I made my own tool out of a long bolt and and bent a piece of flat steel like a big U...
