After installing my exhaust I noticed the start of some rust in a few areas on the frame showing through the undercoating. It wasn't much, but the front strut towers were especially starting to look crummy since we disturbed/compromised some of the undercoating with all the work we had done in that area for the hoop resi's. And since I'll be adding the new coilovers, I figured I would attack this now before the new parts go on to help make it all look new.

I don't have the means, the space or time to do this right and remove the bed (which would require removing the spare and tire mount first).

I have a painter I've been using for some paintwork inside my home and I approached him about doing this job for me, I figured since he was a perfectionist and VERY skilled with a brush he could handle this project albeit not one of his normal painting jobs.

I really just wanted to get any and all areas within reach. The process was to, scrape the undercoating off with a metal scraper, then use steel wool, a wire brush and a rag with lacquer thinner to wipe off any left over residue. I'm impressed with what these guys were able to get done in two days. They even stripped areas I didn't think they could get to all along the entire length of the frame underneath the truck.

I purchased some paint products from Eastwood they should be here tomorrow. PRE (paint prep), Rust Encapsulator (can be used on rusty and clean metal), and Chassis Satin black. I've heard great things about the Rust Encapsulator. Stuff wasn't cheap, but it hopefully will end up being worth the extra expense.

This def wasn't a job I could handle with my gimp achilles, I had a tough time crawling under the truck just to paint my axle.

A couple shots of visible areas of the front and rear stripped. Gap guards are being stripped and repowdercoated too.

Damn that frame looks amazing. Its all about the prep when it comes to a quality paint job. It looks like they did it right.

Yeah, pretty damn clean metal for an east coast, 5 year old truck with 35,000 miles driven in snow/ice/salt for the first couple years :dunno:

I think this had to be done with the coilovers going on soon. It would've looked half ass if I left it as is and it would've just progressively gotten worse.

Have you considered maybe posting a wheel thread? We might be able to suggest some nice choices. Just a thought.

Oh God, I got sick to my stomach looking at that. I NEVER want to strip another frame of that nasty greasy stuff EVER again.

Looks like he did a damn good job. You planning on being at E-town even without the coilovers?
