I do recall hearing a lot about the 1.8T having a lo of sludge issues as well now that you bring it up.

We are probably not the best example of VW longevity either given we barely turned 50K this year and ours is an '05.

What about Pontiac Grand Prix? I know we had a bonnivel (sp?) growing up with the 3800 engine and that damn thing ran forever.

The drivetrain is great in those cars. GM's problem was making little shit that didn't fall off. Switchgear and interior stuff was fragile and keeping spare window motors handy would be good. The basic car will run forever. I believe the later 3400 engine was pretty good as well.

I had the 3400 in my 04' monte carlo. It never gave me issues but I only had that up to 70K.

From what I've read on the Subaru forums, the head gasket issue is pretty much considered a regular maintenance issue for long-term Subaru owners. I've seen quite a bit of noise about. But, the people who have had Subarus for years and years all seem to say the same thing. "Replace the head gasket at around 100k miles and if the job is done right, you don't have to worry about it for another 100k.. But, definitely change it every 100k."

It is especially prominent in the 4-bangers, but is "supposed" to be fixed in the current generation models.. So far, I don't think I've seen anyone on there with a current generation Outback or Legacy with 100k on 'em (yet)..
