Re: Volkswagen Jetta

I have a buddy who just bought his wife one about 4 months ago, they love it! Good MPG and a very comfortable ride! Lots of features including sun roof on hers. The ride is very quite too.

I almost bought my wife one, but she wanted an SUV

Our MKV 2.5 can get 30+ MPG highway and 20+ in town. The TDI is nice (Nick has one) but I believe they will cost you more up front.

Re: Volkswagen Jetta

They are a good ride, good economy as well and can last for 200k. A TDI is a better choice if you are going to keep it for a long time. I know of several that have over 300k on them with no issues.

Re: Volkswagen Jetta

I would not touch an 8 year old 70K VW. Go read up on the huge issues with the 1.8T engine. I've seen a ton of them dead at auction (along with the Audis with the same engine)... Their automatic transmissions grenade at high mileage as well (I realize this one is a manual).

There are far more reliable choices out there.

Euro cars in general are money pits once they start to age.

Re: Volkswagen Jetta

Yeah, I might look more at the GTI instead of the Jetta. Basically, the car made in Germany and not Mexico.

Thanks for that info. What would you suggest I look at then in terms of a car?

Zem see's more vehicle in the line of work he does so he has a better concept in that area. The ones I have see mainly all have been TDI's or the older IDI's.

As for reliability Honda Accords seem to be bullet proof pretty much any year that I'm aware of.

The Diesels and the 2.5 cars seem to run forever. I'm not knocking VW. I like their stuff.

Jon. If I were spending roughly ten grand on a used vehicle I'd be looking at Honda, Toyota, Nissan etc. Subaru is not bad, but I'd stay away from high mile ones (head gasket issues). Kia and Hyundai seem to have really improved their game from about 2007 up, but I'm not sure how much I trust them yet.

If you can handle boring, the Chevy Impala is a pretty solid car and the sell for bargain prices.

All makes have their issues, but I tend to stay away from those who are known to crater and opt for the ones that have better reliability records.
