Cowboy Cadillac
Ain't no trash in my trailer!
Okay so after REPEATED warnings by local law enforcement about the illegality
fingertime
of having no rear bumper or licence plate light, I went in search of said parts. For those who don't know I ruined my last bumper, it included a F450 tow truck and a tow rope. Tow truck moved 3' in 2' of snow/berm along a ditch.
So my coworker had a bumper and tailgate from his '01 GMC 3/4ton RCLB Duramax 6spd that had the box ruined in an accident that he gave to me for a case of beer. After mounting bumper the tailgate wouldn't fit, because it sat too high.
Now the easy way to swap would have been to use my old(thrown out long ago)/ buy new 1/2 ton mounting brackets, but lets face it, Im a cheap ass and I love to fab stuff.
Hers where I started.
Picked a point and whacked it off with cutoff wheel in grinder
Was unsure of how much drop I needed so I started with 1"
Still didn't fit at 1", reset to 1.5" and all was good so went about welding it up solid.
Used some 3/16" flatstock we had kickin' around the shop to fill in the empty spots to keep it solid.
Due to having a bumper again ,the 6" tractor lights I had mounted for backing up/ loading trailers were blocked, so decided to mount lights in the bumper. Used Truklite 4.5" grommets from Semi tractors/trailers to mount lights. 4411 lights at 35w just weren't gonna cut 'er for this cowboy, so I went with 4509 aircraft landing lights at 100w which sounded sufficient
Highly nervous moment right here.....
Finished product
Still need to aim them a little bit but whatever. Ya'll can thank buRRp(Lee) for the expedient delivey of this thread, I was gonna wait till I had more spare time, but he wanted pics.
