A single cam doesn't prevent it to have VVT, so I wouldn't expect it to come with the cam-in-cam setup because of its manufacturing cost.

You get a LOT more timing flexibility with multiple cams.

While a single cam can have VVT, it's almost useless. 2009 Silverado 5.3 w/o VVT: 315hp@5200rpm 338lb-ft@4800rpm. 2010 Silverado w/ VVT: 315hp@5200rpm 338lb-ft@4400rpm. Just a slight 400rpm shift in torque peak, an improvement just not much of one.

My money is on cam in cam, maybe they'll even improve on Chrylser's system and vary the timing of both cams instead of just one while the other is fixed. With both cams being independently variable you get the benefit of a smoother idle and a broader powerband throughout the rev range, not too mention lowering emissions (which no one here really cares about). Most don't have EGR either since they can effectly do the same thing with variable exhaust timing by closing the exhaust valves a little early.

I wonder what they'll come up with once variable lift becomes more common, not much extra room with one cam (or two in the space of one). Guess it seems pretty easy if they improve on the AFM/MDS collapsible lifters and just make them variable height lifters. :dunno:

/end rambling...
