Question:
Why are there different pumps for 2wd and 4wd?
I'm sure that 4wd is harder to move because of the added resistance of the 4wd components.
I'm guessing it's due to the fact that
2wd has rack and pinion steering, while 4wd still has the old recirculating ball steering box.
THAT, i didnt know. thought they were all converted to rack and pinion
I read that they stuck with the old style because the rack & pinion wasn't strong enough.
That comment was in regard to GMT800 trucks. The GMT900s all have struts and rack and pinion steering (half ton, anyway), but on the GMT800 trucks all 4wd models had the recirculating ball steering box style, I believe it was because of clearance, since the frame wasn't designed to fit the 4wd components with a steering rack, but I could be way off on that.
When did GM get away from using torsion bars on 2wd? They're still used on 4wd right?
The only trucks that GM currently uses torsion bars on that I am aware of are the HD trucks.
They were never widely used on 2wd trucks. I know the 2wd SS, the VHO, and some (possibly all) 2wd crew cab GMT800s had torsion bars. There are also some oddball trucks I've seen that have them, for no obvious reason.
