I'm doing my 100,000 miles fluid change. My truck is a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado Z71, it has the Auto 4WD feature with the pushbutton controls. My Transfer Case is a New Process Gear 246. You can locate the tag on the rear of the case to determine what you have.

GM is the sole source for lubricants on these transfer cases, you will need to go to your local dealer for the lubes. I went to my dealership and provided them with the VIN from my truck and they gave me 2 quarts of the special oil. Well they didn't give it to me but it was relatively inexpensive.

GM Auto-Trak II Transfer Case Fluid.

Get access to the transfer case and find the drain plug. In some cases you may have to remove the Transfer Case skid plate. Mine had plenty of room and I didn't have to remove it.

Use an 18mm combination wrench or socket and remove the drain plug. Have a drain pan handy to catch the oil. Remove the Fill plug and clean both plugs up. These plugs are Aluminum so clean them good and apply a little pipe sealant to the threads. After the oil has drained out completely install the Drain plug and tighten to 18 ft.lbs. Use a pump like this, purchased from any parts store, this one cost me $10 at O'Reilly's.

Use the pump and pump oil into the case until it is level with the fill plug hole. It will take almost the entire 2 quarts. Install the fill plug, tighten to 18 ft. lbs. and clean up. Not much to it.

FYI the transfer case will send the fluid flying pretty far back when you remove that drain plug...

My Blazer sent it a good 2 - 3 feet

Sweet, not much has changed I see from my 02 to your model Jarrod.

I wonder how many out there put their trucks in 4wheel mode once in a while to keep all the fluids circulated?

Jarrod, did you run yours in 4 wheel for a little bit before you changed out the T-Case? It probably would be a good thing just to get what can be put into suspension in the oil so it drains out when you pull the plug.

A good point. Should use it once a month or so just to keep the fluid moving through all the gears.

:withstupid:

Dont put the catch can directly under the transfer case, you want it 1-2 feet behind it. When you pull the drain plug..... Comes out like a fire hose.

I'm planning on changing mine out either tonight or this weekend. Figured I would post and bump this for any newbys and a reminder that this fluid needs changed out at least once if you are close to 100k miles.

I changed out my T case fluid and sent a sample in for analysis, it had 79k miles on it. I'm interested to see the results.
