Old big-blocks were cool, but since GM can get a larger profit with the LS (a.k.a. retard on Viagra) and it's actually some good cost-effectiveness it's not so bad...

As far as "sound" goes, there is nothing like an engine that doesn't require spark plugs :jester:

I would roll a diesel for the torque in a tow rig or for possible milage in a DD, but in the mud they just don't generate the wheel speed quickly enough. I've seen lots of tuned diesels try the mud and its still not worth it. They may be able to pull a house down, but in the mud gasoline /ethanol or alcohol still run the show.

And I do love the sound of a diesel....it will put me to sleep if I'm not careful.

I always preferred diesels even for a trail rig, exactly because they're better to use in severe environments and their low-end torque is also better. OK, you know I'm a diesel-nuts, but whatever...

If you are talking about building a engine to run in a mud bog... Be sure to build the engine that will run in the class you want to run in... All the diesels ran in a different class than we did...No Vac pumps... And had to pull 18 vac..... Last year i raced they also put a CI max on every class..

You can get around that..Bore all cylinders but number 1.....

I know someone who did that :jester:

It's based on tire size, unless you have gigantic power, then even with the small tires you run with the bigger tire class.

I know there were some FIA official rules starting to be enforced when diesels started to become competitive and started to beat the gassers in some international racing events, but I don't remember any restriction against vacuum pumps...

Basic local mud bog classes:
* 100 Stock – Up to and including 33” DOT Tires – NO AGS-NO Nitrous

* 250 Modified – Up to and Including 36” DOT Tires – NO AGS- NO Nitrous
...
* 500 Modified – Up to and including 39” DOT Stock Tires - NO AGS- NO Nitrous

* 750 Super Modified – Up to and including 44” DOT Tires - NO AGS- NO Nitrous

* 1250 Unlimited – All other Tire Sizes including AGS – Nitrous – Custom Chassis Configurations, Rail Cars - Etc.

* Vehicles with major power add-ons will run the risk of being bumped up a class this is at the Tech’s discretion.

So the guys running BBF 532 with 650-750HP in the 500 and 700 classes are fine, there are lots of BBC 454s/BBF 390 & 460s in 100 class at some of the smaller bogs, so a stock looking 6L/8.1L shouldn't be a eyecatcher to tech judges. ( guess the supercharger is a no go huh?:jester:)
The only time Ive seen vac being an issue was at the offroad races Dennis took part in last year....had to pull 15

Also the 6L I was hoping to snatch up, sold.....search continues.

It (8.1L)was rated at 345HP and 460/470Ftlbs torque from the factory. I believe it is rated so low to meet emissions laws( don't have those here:thumbs:) but that seems like a realistic loss through the drivetrain.


That's pretty bang on for 30% driveline loss.

A 6.0 has about 340 HP and 360 tq

That's 238HP and 252 tq stock vs. stock

The main issue with the 8.1 is finding heads for it... It's built for towing.
You put a cam, headers, 4" intake and tune on a 6.0 and you're looking at 340/360HP TO THE GROUND lol.

An 8.1L needs major work to get close to that.

Yeah, a cam, headers, an intake and a tune and heads. Add one more item to your list over a 6.0 and that 8.1 will be putting more power out :dunno:

I'm not saying the 6.0 is a bad engine... It's a great little monster! But so far everything you've said to do to the 6.0 you can do to the 8.1... It's just a LOT harder to find the parts to do it with :dunno:

But since James told me the other day that he's not going to use it as a tow rig anymore, then he doesn't need the 8.1 :lol:
