I'm trying to get a different dash for my '98 S10 (and found a complete, perfect matching one for $75) and the question I'm getting is "is it with or without the code ZN4?". The junkyard guy is telling me they are two different dashes and are not interchangeable.

I am unsure if I have the code or not, but I don't think I do.

This is all I've found.
Product Availability

Due to marketing concerns, some models may have VIN badges to indicate one model year, but the engine content may actually be of a previous, or of a future year. This can cause confusion when trying to reference a Model Year (MY) for service concerns. To address this, two RPOs have been designated to indicate a MY "pull ahead" or "Push back". These RPOs (and an explanation) are as follows.

1. RPO "ZN4"

Which means a vehicle is badged for one model year while it is being manufactured into the next (pushed back). A specific case of this are some 1998 S/T pickuptrucks which are VIN'd as 1998, but are manufactured after the traditional August changeover, and contain 1999 Powertrain components. These trucks would contain RPO "+ZN4".
From my understanding, this just means that a late '98 was made under the '98 year badging, but has '99 components (which might be when they went to the 0411 ECM and redid all the electrical; I think '00 for sure the electrical system is different).

Do you guys know anything about the interchangeability or any more info on the code itself?

EDIT: I also just got a stock CD player and will be trying to reset/unlock it. :fingersx:

Just say no and buy it......if it doesn't work for whatever reason, you should be able to get $75+ out of it on CL.

Yes they still are. I just got to the truck and checked it. I don't have the code.

I'll just say "yes I have it" and buy it. I really don't see why the dash panel would be any different; yes the electronics of the truck and wiring are different, but I highly doubt GM would make changes to the dash itself.

Oh, and the CD player works. :dunno: The junkyard must have unlocked it already or something. All I did was plug it in and the radio works. :) Hopefully it doesn't lock on me when I start the truck this fall. :fingersx:

Do you think it will change anything once started? I thought the ECM/BCM communicated to the radio/rest of the truck when the key is turned on. :dunno:

I suppose I can go fire it up.

EDIT: Fired it up and ran it for 30sec and the radio worked just fine.

It only locks if the radio is set to lock... At least, it's supposed to

Dennis, do you know anything about the ZN4 code? I really don't think GM would change the dash.

And yeah, I was really shocked the radio worked right away.

I think that as far as the engine... it means that the starter, bellhousing, and some other bolts, were metric.
After 1999-2000 ALL bolts are metric.
