Its not the dealer telling me that, its my tranny tech, who is making no money off it. Fords 4R100 was originally spec'd for mercon III. Fords Version of Mercon V is considered dual use and used in all trannies. Aftermarket Mercon V meets mercon V specs, but isnt considered dual use. the label claims it's good to go, but i'm not going to push the issue. All the dealership knows is that I want a tranny flush. they are a third party and not involved in any other capacity

Which fluid is called for in your tranny? The Mercon III?

And the Mercon V is rated for use as Mercon III, but the Mercon V you bought isn't, but the label says you're "good to go"? :dunno:

I think I need some Tylenol and a nap. :confused:

My transmission, when new, called for Mercon III

This is what my tranny guy sent me
UNLESS YOU BY THE FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FORD. THEN YOU CAN ONLY BUY FORDS MERCON V.


The answer is cut and dry. Ford no longer makes Mercon. Mercon is a registered trademark of Ford.


If you buy fluid from Ford, it will be Fords Motorcraft MerconV. Ford stopped making Mercon years ago in 2006. Fords Motorcraft MerconV was reformulated and is now considered a "dual usage fluid" and is approved for all of it's Mercon applications.

If you go anywhere else (parts store) just buy regular Dextron/Mercon fluid and DO NOT buy any other brand of MerconV aside from Fords Motorcraft MerconV. Any other MerconV will damage the internal seals.

If you want the info on the Ford Mercon/MerconV fluid change over, look up ford TSB 06-14-4.

It says I should be fine, but If my builder doesn't like the fluid, I don't like it. Like I said, my $4000 built transmission is riding on something that "should be ok". No thanks.

The issue from what I remember back in the day was that the seals swelled and they lost there "seal".

You should be ok but, it was in there. Just flush it and let her eat. You'll know if you will have an issue pretty quickly if you are going to have one.

Took some rubber off doing a powerslide up the freeway on ramp. Not a smart move since tires are expensive. :dunno:

Okay, it's still a little confusing, mostly because your tranny guy keeps contradicting himself and saying things that don't make much sense to me ("UNLESS YOU BY THE FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FORD. THEN YOU CAN ONLY BUY FORDS MERCON V.") but this is what I get from reading both the TSB and the MSDS and Product info PDF from Valvoline:

  1. There never was a Mercon III fluid. There was a Dexron III, but Mercon only came as Mercon, Mercon SP, and Mercon V.
  2. The Valvoline Mercon V formula from Valvoline is licensed from Ford and is Ford Approved as meeting ALL Ford's specs for both Mercon and Mercon V fluids.
  3. Since there is no such thing (as far as I can find out) as Mercon III fluid, and since Ford replaced the old formula Mercon with the new formula Mercon V, and approves of its use in all applications calling for either Mercon or Mercon V fluid, and since you already have Mercon V fluid in there...
What's the dealer's shop going to replace it with?

More Mercon V is what they'll use, since that's the new approved fluid.

And I'll bet you $10 that it's made for Ford (and put in Ford bottles) by... Valvoline. Using the same Ford approved formula they sell under their own brand.

Think about it. Ford does not own any refineries for making tranny fluid, or most of the lubricants used in their vehicles. They contract it out to oil companies, like Valvoline, to make for them, and they then license that company to sell it under their own brand as Ford approved.

Yeah, the dealer will drain and flush the system, and refill it. With exactly the same thing that's currently in there.

IMHO the real thing getting "drained and flushed" here is your wallet.

But hey, that's just my opinion, and it's your truck. :)
