If your Dad is forcing you to keep the truck... I would shop for a same make, model, year 4x4 chassis, and drop your truck on that new 4x4 chassis. (as mentioned earlier)

This is an older thread, I bumped it last night because he had started a new one on the same subject. I was curious because this one is listed as a '96, I thought maybe he had bought a new truck, also in 2wd.

No point in trying to do all that custom fabrication on a truck that was never meant to be 4WD.

Looks like you just need to learn to live with it for now.

It's not the easiest thing to convert a 2WD truck to 4WD, but I have seen some conversion kits that are plug n' play to the full-size Chevy trucks, but this is no longer on production.

You can actually do the 4WD conversion but would spend too much for it...
