I haven't removed one of these tailgate caps in a while and I was surprised to see that there are holes under the cap.

Weight reduction any way possible all to conform to the Governments mpg standards. The metal is also like tin foil compared to the trucks of yesteryear.
I'd guess it has more to do with ventilation to help keep corrosion down.

Well what ever the reason I was shocked when I pulled the cap off and saw all of the holes.
