Yep, that sounds like what they do here Michael. Only Baton Rouge has somewhat stricter inspections.
New Orleans used to be almost as bad as California, but they actually stopped that around 2004. About that time, they cracked down on all the corruption and illegal passing of inspection, etc. (just like gramps said) and they started doing like the rest of the state and just about any mechanic shop can do inspection now and all they do is check wiper, lights, etc. Not to mention it was a severe pain in the ass because you had to wait ALL DAY because there were only 2 inspection stations in the whole dam city.
I remember when I had a car back around 1998 or so (when my car was registered in NewOrleans), I needed an inspection sticker (but I knew I wouldnt pass inspection) so I asked a friend who knew "some guy" who sold inspection stickers for 75 bucks.(compared to $15 if bought legally) You just went to him with the money and he had a stack of the stickers in his pocket. He was selling the "last months" extra stickers. The New Orleans inspection stickers looked completely different from all other surrounding parishes. And depending on what month you got your car inspected, the sticker was a different color. Other stickers (the state stickers) had a universal sticker that they put the expiration date on. But NewOrleans had "pre printed" expration dates on their stickers. They supposedly did that so cops could see from a distance what color your sticker was, and depending on the color they could kinda tell if it was expired or not. So on say april first, the inspectors were supposed to "dispose" of all leftover March stickers, when in reality they would be sold on the black market. It was commonly known by dam near anyone about this practice (you just had to know the right people) and The shit eventually hit the fan in around 04 when The mayor decided to do a "sting" and internal investigation.

He probably wasn't get his take anymore.... :uhoh:

WTF is it called a brake tag?

Because the inspection was mainly focused on inspecting the "brakes"

They checked the brakes, pedal pressure, stopping distance, etc. and they also did a smog test, and they would fail you if your check engine light was on also.

I've only actually been to the "old" brake tag station once (and I failed cuz my check engine light was on). Not too soon after my "illegal" tag expired, I moved to Jefferson parish where you could go just about to any mechanic shop and they just checked the wipers and lights and stuff. Even when I eventually moved back into NewOrleans, I kept my vehicles registered at my Mom's address in Jefferson parish for that reason (plus my insurance was a lil cheaper too)

We don't have emissions testing here, but they do on the mainland in Vancouver. Though considering how many vehicles I see and smell, they could probably use it to get these high polluters fixed. There are some vehicles you can see from a mile away from the clouds of stuff they push out.

Thankfully theres only a handful of cars that I've seen that bad here. Most of them were well over 10-15 years old too.

I took my Burb in to have the bi-annual check done last sat.,and it passed with ease. For those of you who don't need to do that consider yourselfs lucky,it's a PITA,especially when the vehicle doesn't pass....no new license sticker.

All the smog equipment better be there and working. They do a visual and mechanical check. They put a sniffer up your tailpipe, they put it on rollers and check it while running it,in gear, kinda like a scaled down dyno.Something as simple as a leaking gas cap can be a fail.

I'm guessing there are some good stories about smogging your car/truck,please tell us :D

Glad you got your sticker without trouble GD. Thankfully MA stopped doing emissions tests on vehicles that predate OBDII. So my 85' only has to pass safety.

On my 03' the check engine light was on when I took it for an inspection, they diagnosed it as a bad glow plug, and since the truck is still under its emissions warranty, BAM, new set of glow plugs for free.
