Well when you have counties and cities that are not familiar with this sort of thing, and have no equipment to combat the ice and snow, and have people who have never driven in snow.....

It can shut a community down and quick.

It took us getting 2 and a half or so feet of snow to shut down school and only for a day.

They had to bring snow plows in from Amarillo (about 350 miles away) and I think they only cleared off roads about the fWONking Super Bowl... Every other street and highway in town had an inch or more of ice on it.. Traffic has eventually beat-down most of the highways. But, a lot of side streets are still a little rough..

I've never even seen a snow plow. When it snows once every 15 years, you don't spend a lot of money on such stuff I guess.

Ah I forgot about the ice factor with sleet. That would be a bitch considering a lot of the vehicles would be running summer tires or even all seasons which are terrible in winter.

Yeah, most folks down here don't care about winter / snow / ice traction, since we usually only get A day of snow each year and it's usually gone within 24-36 hours.. This rain / sleet / little bit of snow, plus several days straight of no sun and sub-freezing temps isn't something we normally have to deal with.

Im sure theres lots of people, that like Zem, had their rads and heating systems freeze solid and burst.
Not having a block heater prob didnt help, spend the extra few bucks and get one installed.....just in case you get a freak snow storm

I have antifreeze in mine......no problems......

Running even the slightest mix of antifreeze here is enough to dodge the problem. It just doesn't get that cold here...

The Ford Explorer has 215K on the clock and admittedly has not seen much maintenance in the last 115K. I'm basically gonna drive it until it coughs up a lung one day and I'm going to leave it wherever it croaks... to be picked up by the state and auctioned off to some guy that will probably patch it up and take it to Mexico.
