I'm just not a fan of it (and don't have it on my truck anyways). I prefer to be the one that decides what is selected. Plus I don't ever want to hear what it sounds like when the front diff engages with the engine reved :ohnoes:. I just think its better to be off the gas whenever changing from 2wd to 4Hi.

Question: Why is there a Neutral light on early GMT-800's even though there's no button for it? How do you even get the T-case into Neutral? I can't do it on mine, but I know you can with the manual shift 4x4.

It's seamless. Works perfect, and those fears are unfounded.

You push both buttons at the same time for neutral, noob.

:D
So do the Auto 4x4 T-cases have clutches in them or what? And which two buttons do you hold?

ive never really took a look at it but i "think" the front driveshaft spins all the time and the front axle is just engaged when needed? im not sure if it engages/ disengages anything inside the transfer case

The T case is engaged, but when wheel slip is sensed the front diff engages. It is a seamless transition and there is no worries about an engine over revving.

It's really a thing of beauty. You should try it before you decide whether you like it or not

Thanks J-rod!

Cody, this is what I found for my truck:
Well I don’t know about 1997 or 1999 chevy’s but for my 1998 the following is from the owners manual.

1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the Vehicle.
3. Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
4. Put the transmission in neutral.
5. Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
6. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to neutral is complete.
7. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second, then shift the transmission to AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D) for one second.
8. Turn the ignition OFF.
9. Place the transmission shift lever on PARK (P).
10. Release the parking brake prior to towing.

What is the advantage of towing a vehicle with the T-case in Neutral VS the trans in Neutral? Does it prevent damage to the internals of the trans?

nubuilder if your 98 is like my 97 and you have the push button t-case, the front differential is almost identical from 88-2011 in how it looks and works, and there is a electrical solenoid that engages a pin that engages the front axle, and in the auto t-case trucks the the front drive shaft is always spinning, and when wheel spin is detected, power is given to that solenoid and the front axle is engaged
