What do you guys know / think about the G6?

My mom is looking at them for her next vehicle.

Any known big problems or areas of concern?

The V6 would be nice (and that's what she wants), but how hard is it to work on? Can you get to all 6 plugs without any extra work (I know the Grand Prix's had a problem getting to cyl #3 or 4)? The one thing I like about 4cyl's is the spark plugs are on the top instead of the sides.

The MPG difference isn't all that much.
I-4 (4spd auto)= 22 / 30 with a 25 mix
I-4 (S6 auto) = 22 / 33 with a 26 mix
V6 3.5L (4spd auto)= 18 / 29 with a 22 mix

What the heck is the difference between the 4spd auto and this S6 auto? (never heard of it having 2 transmissions for the 4cyl)

Any input is much appreciated!

I know you have done your research and I don't mean to shoot the G6 down, but have you checked out the Accord's?

G6 is a pretty decent last offering from Pontiac. It's built on the same platform as the previous generation Malibu. They aren't bad cars, but thee are some out there that are probably more reliable. I think the 4 cyl trans differences you are seeing are from early and late production models.

One positive side of buying one is that the resale value of them isn't very strong. This is a good thing if you are in the market to buy one.

I think she wants to stick with an American made car (I'm not putting down any others; I haven't seen any Accords lately, but they are a nice car). She said she should buy a new Volkswagen for $15k, but that parts would be expensive to get and hard to come by.

I never thought about the difference in years for the trans. The only thing is that I selected all the MPG ratings for a 2010...so there must be something to the transmissions. Is one an Auto and one an Auto w/manual shift?
You are very right on the value. All the ones we are looking at are between $12k-$14k with 24k mi - 30k mi; with the exception of one that has 4k miles on it for $17k. We're waiting for the dealer to get this one in. Here's the link to it (no pics yet because they bought it, but don't have it yet). It is pretty much decked out minus the GTP package. The mileage is what I really like about it and my mom likes the heated leather seats and sunroof. This is the 2nd choice ($13k 28k mi). She just said that she'd never buy red car again, but that might change...for the 2nd time in a row.

How long is GM going to keep supporting / producing parts for Pontiac's?

Yip. It's like buying a new car for about 60% of the original sticker.

I'd spend a touch more money and get a G8:

Click.

Ok...maybe that's not an option...but I would also look at the Grand Prix/Impala...You can find those for around the same money with the same miles.

Click 2.

Click 3.

4 speed trans = 4T60E

S6 = sport six speed automatic

Not sure why it's only an option on the 4 banger... Unless it's the turbo 4...

I tend to agree with Matt on looking at other models too. They all get pretty much the same fuel economy.

You can look at the Accords, Camry's, etc but the resale value on a low mile car is going to be stronger... so you're likely paying more.

Thanks Dennis! That makes sense since the S6 gets better HWY mileage. I don't think there is/was a turbo on the G6 though.

That's why I'm confused as to why they offer the 6 only on the 4
