It's the sending unit. Had the same deal on my '99 GMC. I just lived with it until I traded it in. It's in the fuel tank so you'd have to either drop the tank or remove the bed to access it. If you do it yourself most people recommend replacing the fuel pump as well while your there depending on what your mileage is.

Diffs are 3.8:1 and tranny is: 3.57, 2.20, 1.51, 1.00, 0.80:1. Reverse: 4.10:1, transfer case is:1.00:1 (hi), 2.69:1 (lo)

But taking it that low would kill what little bit of gas mileage I do get without making up for that much difference offroad.
