Ok so today i changed my engine oil and filter. I took a sample of the oil to send off. I have used Mobil 1 Full syn for the life of the engine except twice. One on 1000 mile brake in and another when my fuel pressure regulater went out. The oil that i drained today followed the oil that ran for 1000 miles to clean the gas out of the crankcase. My question is why would my oil be so dark (almost black)? Could it have been residule gas? The oil did not smell of any gas. I should also mention my oil has NEVER been this dark. Total miles on engine is about 40,000 give or take.

Hell No! lol Caterpillar Guaranties 24hr turn around for sample results once they receive it. I will probably stop by Holt Cat on my way home tomorrow and send it then.

Sounds like the oil was doing it's job and cleaning up the inside of the engine from where it was mixed with fuel. What filter did you have on it?

Oil color is not always a good indicator of its condition. It will be interesting to see the results.

I always thought oil was supposed to turn black shortly after being run in the engine?

Gas is solvent and the oil in the engine gets carbon build up no matter what. With gas in the crankcase you have released the carbon deposits of the walls of the block and everyplace else the oil/gas mixture flowed.

If this is what ment by cleaning.....did you use gas in the oil and drive for 1000 Miles? If so you might end up having seals go bad and gaskets might start leaking. Gas is not good for the seals and can seep under gaskets

Jim,

I know color isn’t a good indication of oil life. In a diesel the new oil turns black in the first day, just nature of the beast. My concern here is that my oil has never been this dark.

Black Z60,

I did not use gas to clean the engine. What happened was my fuel pressure regulator blew out in my truck a few months ago. During the diagnosis I pulled the dip stick to check for water in the oil. I didn’t find any water but the oil reeked of gas. Since the cylinders where flooded with gas some of it must have pass the rings and ended up in the crankcase. After I replaced the regulator I changed the oil using oreilly brand 5w30 and a ac delco filter. I ran that oil/filter combo for 1000 miles and then changed it to what I had before, Mobil 1 full syn with a Mobil 1 oil filter, which was drained and replaced today.

I understand that. I'm just saying that it's nothing to panic over. Get the results back and see what you have. That's all.
