Don't knock the 4.8. It's 305HP and a damn strong unit. It's exactly the same engine as the 5.3 but has a shorter stroke... AND NO AFM!

~305HP? Well...if I were at GM...either the 4.8 or 5.3 would be on the chopping block. They are far too close in output to justify having both.

5.3:
HP - 315
TQ - 335

4.8:
HP - 302
TQ - 305

I agree totally. It is funny to see the fanboys who brag about how superior their 5.3 is to the 4.8 when the two are damn near identical. In fact, I really doubt that anybody would tell the difference between the two if they were in similar trucks. GM should lose the 5.3 with AFM and keep the 4.8.

Well...I think they should build the 5.3 and 4.8 and whicever one responds to the build the best (ie better fuel economy, handling more power, etc) should be the one they keep.

I would love to see...rather than have two engines...have one engine that has a power output of 350-375HP. That way, GM would save a boat load on parts, engine production etc, and with that savings, they could use that 350-375HP engine as the base engine in the 1/2 tons and have..."THE MOST POWERFUL STANDARD V8 PUT INTO ANY PICKUP TRUCK...EVER".

That would be in the ads...:jester:

They could easily get 350 plus HP out of either engine now but the emissions and fuel economy would suffer. If they could get 375HP out of the current engines without losing mpg or emissions... you'd be seeing it now.

Seeing as how GM just announced a newly revised direct injection generation of these engines coming soon... this is a dead argument anyway.

My dads 01 5.3 ran 15.8 in the 1/4. my step brothers 07 classic 4.8 ran 16.3in the 1/4

Sharp looking truck there. I'm currious to see this "leveling switch" and what it is connected to.

I can't wait to see those direct injection engines. Anyone know of a good article about them yet? I wonder if we'll be able to build an engine using it soon. Like maybe a direct injected 383 using and old block??? :D

But what about the There's no replacement for displacement! argument I've read so much about on this forum....:dunno: And besides, I like my additional 13 ponies under the hood. :jester:

Justin can pull the plug on the AFM while you're getting a BB tune anyway....

Which really is meaningless unless they were identical trucks running the same day.

Monobrow gearheads will always opt for the "bigger is better" side of the argument. Performance wise, it's not even a rational statement... but you can't tell them that. Many significantly smaller engines make as much or more power than our 4.8 - 5.3 trucks ever thought about making.
