on my 84 chevy 3/4ton, it has auto hubs in it, there is nothing to turn to lock it or unlock it, so i got some warn locking hubs, without them the truck is in 4x4 all the time. problem is that im not sure if it has 3/4 or 1ton gear in it, i got the hubs for 3/4ton, how will i know if they are right? will they fit in and not work or will they not even fit in there spot? i just bought the truck a couple weeks ago and the guy i got it from took out the hubs cause he dident like how it drove on tar with the auto hubs in it. thank you

It may be different splines on the shafts. You may to take one apart and compare it before you install it.

Auto hubs are what they say "auto" they lock and unlock automaticaly, they work by when you put the truck in 4x4 the front diff turns and locks the hubs then you take it out the front diff does not turn (I always backed up about 5ft to unlock) so they unlock. Have you tryed backing up while in 2wd and see if they unlock?

I just reread your post again, you say he took the auto hubs out? Or are they still in there as your first sentance says so? If there still in there and working (front wheels pull in 4wd) I would try putting the truck in 2wd and back up about 5-10 feet or longer and see if they unlock, you should hear a click click then have someone look under the truck and drive forward a few feet to see if the front driveshaft is turning if its not then the hubs are working. Tearing into hubs is not a fun deal, alot of clips and rings and you will need a hub removel scoket.

they are out of it, just has a round chrome cover with nothing behind it, he gave me the hub stuff in a box, lol. ive never even got to try out the 4x4 yet! would there be another reason that it was in 4x4 all the time other than he dident back up far enuff to unlock? (with the auto hubs in it)

If there are no hubs in it there is no way the fronts are locked up. Or to you mean the t-case is full time 4WD?

I don't think I am understanding.:dunno:

sorry, what i mean is, there are no hubs in it so i have never had the chance to try out the 4x4, the old owner took them out because he said it was like a full time 4x4 and he dident like it always in 4x4. so i got new warn locking hubs so i can lock and unlock them as i want. and im not sure if they will fit because im not sure if its 3/4ton or 1ton frontend gear in it. i can tell you that my rear driveshaft in it is different than most ive seen, instead of being a fat driveshaft from top to bottom, it is fat from bottom and at the top it gets real skinny, so i think the slip is in the driveshaft instead of in the tcase, maybe it is a 203 with a fixed yoke? full time 4x4 tcase? i just dont know:confused:

They previous owner may of changed a few things on the vehicle from the stock form.

The T-case should have a ID tag on the back of it.

If it is a full time case, yes the front should always power to it. As for the shifting pattern, it depends on the case. A standard pattern for a PT case is; 2hi,4hi,N,4lo. I am not sure how to call the FT case, but it is 4hi loc, 4hi,N4lo,4lo loc. Its been a while since I messed with these. It should be a NP 205 or NP 208 case. Brian(alljackedup408) may have more insight on this.
