Chains or 4x4

Hey all,


Since this will be my first time driving my truck up to Yosemite in Feb. Yippee!! Should I buy chains just in case I do need them for the trip up there. I am not sure what the weather will be like in Yosemite until next month but I thought I would ask now.

Also what are snow socks? I don't want to buy any chains if I am going to be buying new tires soon either.


I hope it does snow a bit but not much so I can still take pics of the Firefall at Horsetail Falls.

I can't bring myself to trust those, lol. But if tire chains can fit on your truck, they're not a waste, as long as they still fit the new tires...

I just don't want to get dinged not for having tire chains. I rather be prepared than not prepared. My dad is driving his surburban up to Yosemite but his is older than mine.

Probably, you'll be OK with just 4wd. Some areas may require chains, there must be a DOT website you can check? You can get a set of chains pretty cheap, couldn't hurt to have the extra insurance- they'll help in deep mud too. I'd give them a test fit in your warm dry driveway rather than learning how to do it on the side of the road in the snow

My old Chevy was great in the snow (even better when I got the Snow rated tires) What kind of tires are on it now?

Here it is all vehicles except 4WD when it is snowing hard When they closed the pass I was on this week, they had the Chains Required postings up for about 6 hours prior to closing it.

Ahhh, up here I've only seen the chains required signs for heavy traffic, and winter rated tires for everything smaller stuff

It gets easier the farther north you go . In Alaska they just told us good luck. Never saw any chains required for anything

I like Alberta... When they close a highway, they just put a cop there, who's sole purpose is to to tell you that if something happens, nobody is coming to help you, lol.
