Trying to get some info on MSD box's.

I was getting ready to just order a MSD starter saver, but have read some boxes have it built in. My timing is locked at 40 degrees + high compression big block.. Even have about the best starter money can buy, Running 2 battery's. Still have trouble starting.

And trying to do this the cheapest way. I have a MSD 6a in the truck now. But it does not have the start retard build in.

I've read that the 6AL does have it built it, but i found one locally used. And i don't think it had anything like that. I ended up not buying it.

You can buy the MSD 8984 starter retard box seperatly. And i will if i can't come up with another plan. But if i can get everything in one box, for cheapish, i will do that. And put the box i have now on another truck i'm building..

Any advice is welcome!

I had the 6al on my impala. I don't recall it having start retard as you say on it. Just that the al had a rev limiter that you could change out to what ever rpm you wanted. Which was a nice feature to keep from going past what ever redline your engine is built for.

Sounds like the separate box is the way to go and what I would do.

Same here, back when I had mine there was no such feature, nor was a separate box available

It would have been nice, I see where he is going.

No, the 6AL does not have a start retard built in. Like said above you have to get a separate box.

You'll have to step up to a Digital 6 if you want start retard built in. If you do that, don't forget that it will require more coil too. There are a list of coils that will work with a Digital 6.

I just bought a second digital 6 on Amazon because I was having issues with my other one. It's on its way to MSD to get rebuilt.

I don't think the digital 6al has it either.

The Digital 6 Plus does. That's what I run.

MSD's reliability was taking a shit in the 90's so I stopped running them. Switched back to HEI's, but that's been 20 years ago...

What's the reliability of the new digital units?

We have had pretty good luck with them.

We have certainly had a couple of failures, but they are used in pretty extreme vibration and hear areas.

If I get back into the game I may give them another shot at my business then.
