Just got done cruisin' around...:uhoh:

They had a white Z71 'Hoe at the Chevy lot that was pretty slick and got curious. Did the 900s ever develop any common problems that seemed to be more of the rule than the exception similar to the gauge cluster stepper motors, fuel sending unit, and steering column were to the 800s? Didn't have my Sierra long enough to have any problems besides a water leak at the 3rd brake light but my cousin who has it now says one of the power windows and one of the lock actuators no longer works and my dad's Sierra just lost a lock actuator. :dunno:

I don't put many miles on my trucks or keep them long so take my experiences for what its worth.

I'm on my 5th GMT900 and I haven't experienced any major issues from the trucks I have owned. Every one of them has had a slight rattle/ticking noise by the passenger side windshield when it gets colder (below 40). It's an easy fix but I've had it in every truck. 4 of the 5 had the 5.3 and not one of them had any of the oil consumption issues that other owners have experienced. All have been built in Mexico as well.

Issues by truck:

2007 Z71 - none
2008 Z71 - rear main seal replaced & windshield washer recall (I never had it done)
2012 Denali - none
2012 All Terrain - none
2013 All Terrain - none

From what I have experienced with rental hoe's that I will get on some weekends and for the church trips I've had them with about 20-40k miles. None of them had a hint of gauge cluster issues, fuel sending unit or the steering column rattle.

Beyond that, I really can't say other than the fact that I speculate the issues will be more far and few between on the 900's...

The only two issues that seemed very common were the power door locks and the body mount creaking sound (tsb fix for that).

I miss my gmt900. :(

Here's what I can recall.

  • Rear main seals in the earlier models. (My Sierra had this issue)
  • Door lock actuators failing. (Had one fail on me so far. One is acting up occasionally)
  • Shitty base cloth that attracted everything. (Dealt with this too)
  • Cracking dashes in earlier models. (Not yet!!!)
  • AFM lifter issues (Not me, but some)
  • Peeling steering wheel spoke covers (Had this issue on the Hoe. The black rubbery covers peel)
  • Cheap, easy-to-break plastic chrome door handles. (I've gone through 3 now)

I'm not sure if this was an issue with half tons but my truck developed a popping from the front body mount when going up an incline. After using a GM body mount insulator the problem was fixed. I had the door lock problem for a day or two but it somehow fixed itself.

I still love my 900!

I had the cracked dash issue, but GM came through on that and replaced it with the newer design for absolutely no charge to me.

I have heard about the door handle and AFM issues, but I have not had a problem with either.

Currently, I have around 70,000 miles on the truck.

Are you wanting to buy new or used?

Still debating on what I want to do but if I ditch the Jeep it'll be new. Interest rate is too low and too many incentives to buy used IMHO.

If you are buying new, I can't think of any issues, currently. The cracked dash, rear main seal, and AFM lifter issues were covered in '07-'08. I traded ol blue at 30K so I never had the dash issue.

So far I have had mine in for a door seal in 4 years.

Like already mentioned, the dash cracks, peeling steering wheel, lock actuators and window motors, exterior door handles breaking, and the cable for the interior door handle break pretty frequently from what I hear. And then the oil consumption issues on some of the AFM engines. I have also heard many complaints about the black paint wearing off of the radio and AC buttons.
