I got new shocks a few months ago. I had my choice narrowed down to Bilstein and KYB just like you. I ended up going with the KYB Monomax, mainly because they were so much cheaper in price. Sometimes I wish I would have forked out the extra cash for the Bilstiens. The Monomax shocks are pretty good as far as ride and comfort, but as far as performance and handling, they suck. They are pretty much the same as the OEM shocks. I also found that on REALLY bad roads, they suck. But I am not sure if my springs play any part in that either. I had the OEM Nivomat shocks, and I had to get stiffer Moog rear springs when I switched shocks.

I vote for finding some out of an old Pontiac Sunfire and giving those a shot. Look for lower mileage though.

Kid down the street told me about some Pinto shocks at a garage sale. Gonna check that out.

You might need shock extenders on those though. But then again you might not, since you are lowered.

UPDATE:

I had a pair of MOnroe Gas Magnum shocks I had purchased back when I lowered the truck. Since I had gone with the air shocks, I just had them siting on a shelf - forgotten about.

Well on a whim (and based on Carl's recent success) I decided to install them.

WOW.

What a frikkin difference. The once bouncy rear end is controlled and 75% gentler over bumps. I'm amazed. I really did not think a shock was going to make much difference. I thought the problem was stiff rear springs (mine are lowered leafs from McGaughys).

WOO HOO!
