that is a cool little article, and I had the joy of driving an 86 944 for a couple of months, only it was NOT turbo

Not really so. 911s are quite reliable cars. They require some maintenance but the mechanicals are very solid. People are just scared of them because they are a mystery to the average mechanic (or buyer)... and a bit on the expensive side to buy.

You have to jump in and learn the cars.
