The pre-cat (the first catalytic converter) on my Altima went bad about a year ago. Everything I read about all over the net says its actually very common for them to fail on the 2.5 Altimas. If its not replaced quickly, debris from the catalyst can be sucked back into the engine and end up causing complete engine failure. Since the pre-cat is integrated into the exhaust manifold, you only have two options. Replace the manifold with cat at a cost of 350-500 bucks (and that was cheaper ones) Or...replace the exhaust manifold with a header thus eliminating the pre-cat. I went with the header.
