The pre-cat (the first catalytic converter) on my Altima went bad about a year ago. Everything I read about all over the net says its actually very common for them to fail on the 2.5 Altimas. If its not replaced quickly, debris from the catalyst can be sucked back into the engine and end up causing complete engine failure. Since the pre-cat is integrated into the exhaust manifold, you only have two options. Replace the manifold with cat at a cost of 350-500 bucks (and that was cheaper ones) Or...replace the exhaust manifold with a header thus eliminating the pre-cat. I went with the header.

On mine, I kept getting a "Catalyst Efficiency " code popping up. Even after clearing it, it kept coming back. From searching Google and reading many forums, and a few TSB's, the only thing that really causes that code is a bad cat. And if ignored, the bad cat can lead to catastrophic engine failure. I didn't wanna take any chances, so I just eliminated the pre cat.
From what I have read about people who didn't replace the cat (or never even knew it was bad because they just ignored the SES light), the engine gets debris sucked back through the exhaust from the degrading catalyst. That debris starts to destroy the rings on the pistons. Then the engine starts to consume large amounts of oil. Like a quart or more every 1000 miles. By that point the engine is pretty much toast. Nothing will fix it except rebuilding the engine. Some people just fill it with thick oil and sell it to some sucker who is luck to get 6 months out of it if he keeps adding oil.

Scotty - the forward cats on the xterra are bolt in.

Nick - I talked to a mechanic friend of mine at work about it a few weeks ago. I'm not 100% sure. On the xterra they typically go out around 80k miles. Mine went out at 84k. I had it replaced about a year later had it replaced again under warranty. I think it was due to a bad install.

Mr_bots - really no big deal. It's got 150k miles on it. We had a few issues with it before I started working on it but we had an extended warrenty.

Update on this. Lol I know it's been awhile.

I replaced the cat and put new gaskets in. They were never changed. 20k later still kicking.
