What's this sound?

Lately, I've noticed a slapping/ticking sound coming from under the hood, mostly after start-up and when at idle. Cannot hear it when accelearting or at speed, and most of the time after the vehicle has been run, it goes away. I guess the best way to describe the sound would be like a jump rope hitting the pavement.

sounds like a lifter.. as long as it goes away quickly.. no issues.

hey brian are these trucks subject to similar piston slap issues as the past?

my truck has both lifter and piston slap issues. not major tho, minor nussance. when they get bad enough is cam time!!!

you know clancy... good question. I have seen lifter issues on some of the new 5.3's.. but no piston slap. But as we start seeing more of them roll in with higher mileage...then well see... time can only tell. And if i DO see / hear any piston slap issues.. i will surely post.

Mine knocks & ticks pretty hardcore for 30 seconds or so after start up if I don't let it warm up a little before driving...even if it's 90* outside. I'm going to up it to a 150 shot and see what it's made of lol.

If it happens when the engine hasn't warmed up it's probably piston slap or the lifters like Mr Green said.

OK maybe 20. lol. It's always knocked during cold winter starts, but now it does it in the summer. If I start it for the first time and start driving it knocks for 15-20 seconds under light acceleration.

Used 5.3 long and short blocks are dirt cheap!

yeah.. cheap they are... does ur motor use any oil? Im bettin them sprays have demolished the rings lol
