I just left the belt on, and used a big crescent and gave it a whack with a hammer it it came loose real easy

thats how i do em.

Glad you got 'er fixed. Gotta love how easy GM V8s are to work on. Alternator right on top, water pump right in the front. Just think that the 05+ are even easier without a clutch and fan to deal with on the water pump.
