ok update on this. I found a wire from my new ac delco battery cables that is suposted to ground to a spot on the fender. ther is anouther ground there which according to my book is the ground for the headlights which was loose. I cut off the barrle connecter on the wire and installed a ring terminal and connected it to the ground. Checked the connection with a ohm meter and it good. Also on my blower moter the power connetion was cut (maybe by me a few years ago) and connected with a wire nut. Cut the wire nut and old connecter off and replaced connecter to motor. Start up is now showing 13.5 at gauge and 13.9 at battery with lights, ac, and turn signals on. Hopefully that part of the problem is fixed but since i don't have a spare fuse for the drls they are just going to have to wait.

P.S. Ice cream after work outside in 100* weather is a good thing :D

Doesn't sound so out of the ordinary to me. Running headlights AC and all at night taxes the electrical system. If it still reads 12 volts and goes back to 13 or better unloaded, you are fine. Also keep in mind that those gauges aren't necessarily telling you the exact voltage output. They are just a guide.

What you describe does not sound like a problem unless you see it start to drop even more.

I disagree. With the engine running, even with a full load on the electrical system, the voltage shouldn't drop below 13 (13.5 would be my preference) and if it does then you have a problem.

Looking at what he repaired I'd say the bad ground was part of the problem, but he could also have other bad grounds, or a bad diode pack in the alternator.

Also, while checking the ground with an ohm meter is useful, you'll get more accurate results by checking for a voltage drop across the connection.

The voltage readings you're showing now are good, but I think I'd want to check all the connections one more time, looking for corrosion, rust, loose screws, etc.
