Do you mean the engine was turning over but it wouldn't actually fire up and start running?

Almost, but not quite... Cranking (at least to me) is the starter spinning. Turning over is the flywheel actually turning and the pistons moving.
Break off a few teeth on the flywheel, or burn out the solenoid in the starter, and it's entirely possible to have it crank but not turn over.
