The Official DEF Usage Thread

Thought some of us diesel guys could share our usage of the Urea! Sounds like a venereal disease!

My truck, 2012 Ford Super Duty, 6.7 Power Stroke.

Got 5708 miles before the warning popped up. Had the truck serviced and they supposedly topped off the DEF.

1100 miles later got the 500 mile warning again. All 1100 miles had been towing my 6 X 10 trailer around to shows and work. Not sure of the weight, but the damn thing is almost overloaded.

Bought 2, 2.5 gallon jugs of DEF and added one to the tank and that brought it full. So it was definitely topped off at 6800 miles.

Post what you are going through please so we can compare. I know about the deletes but I don't have the cash to do the mods right now.

Weird to put in "exhaust fluid" AKA Pig piss. Mercedes has been using it for years.. They go a LONG time on a tank of piss. I wonder if you have a leak or a problem with yours. I do not have much expierence with it in domestic trucks yet. Dont get that crap on you either.

Doubtful on the leak part, no stains or puddles anywhere in site. Plus the truck will sit for 4 to 5 days while I work, in between drives, and no spots on the pavement.

I have read that towing and aggressive driving can cause usage to increase. But this is my first diesel with Urea so what the hell do I know.

I do like to see 20+ pounds of boost on take off though.

thats stupid. you gotta buy not only gas but also that urea crap more often than you change your oil, total BS! how much does that stuff cost anyway?

$14.99 for a 2 1/2 gallon jug. So yeah higher than fuel cost per gallon.

Not a truck but my wife's '12 X5 diesel just turned 4,000 miles and no warning message yet. It sees plenty of spirited driving.

Her 2010 X5 had around 10k miles when we sold it and never put any urea in it. Of course it was topped off with the annual service.
