Decided to make a new intake that looked as cool as a commercial intake but would not put a dent in my wallet and would not require a tuning adjustment.
Started out looking for a stock intake off of any 04+ 4.6L F150. I found one for about $20 off of a 2006. Unfortunately I didn't realize they changed the design some time between 2006 and 2008 because when I got it this other intake looked quite a bit different. Ahead of the bend is exactly like mine.

I cut open the first large piece of the intake to expose the filter for two reasons. The first was to show off the aftermarket filter and second to keep leaves from collecting around the filter. Not sure how they get in there but I have to dump it out at least twice a year.
The results at this point

The next steps did not get pictures but I basically cut the resonator off of the intake, patched the hole for the resonator and put a few layers of glossy spray paint.
Here are the results

I might still paint that big peice of plastic that houses the MAF sensor but now it is getting too humid from a rain storm to paint.
The only things I used besides the stock parts were a hack saw, screwdriver and 2 hose clamps because the rubber boots were originally glued to the plastic pipe. Total cost for me to do this $40. This included the $23 stock intake, $2 in hose clamps and the rest was gas to have a little fun testing it out. I dont feel any more power than I did with the gotts mod but it has more of a show look to it.

Looks like it would flow better. I'm sure it has some new sound too!

Actually the intake is about 1/3 of an inch smaller in diameter so I think it will flow less. I'll probably do some 1/4 miles later to see how it does.

But it does have a neat sound to it. No drone but you can hear it pulling in air at low speeds and between shifts because I trimmed that front part of the air box. Tested with the stock intake to make sure I wasn't hearing leaks or something.

Went ahead and painted the large plastic part so it will all look the same when it gets dirty.

Nice Work man! It looks really good. I am interested in seeing how it performs.

My only concern is the open eliment vs closed before. Cool air makes more HP. BUT, there is only one way to find out if therory holds true...Post some track numbers:thumbs:

BTW, you should wash your engine bay. :D
Dont even go there. That IS after I've hosed it off. The dirt just goes into the plastic and wont come out. I'm not going to sit there and scrub with the end of my thumb until it falls off. I'm also hesitant because of all the horror stories I've heard of shorting out the coils with water. I tried my tire foam that usually works really well on tires but that didn't do anything. I'll get something better next time I'm at the store if I remember.

Got back a little while ago from doing a nice little 40 mile cruise that had highway, back road but mostly gravel road just because that is more fun to drive on. No issues or any loss in power. Did some 1/4 mile sprints with the programmer and they are still where I usually get time wise.
Temperature, however, is an issue. The lowest temp is about 5 degrees warmer than the (other) stock intake with a modified fender snorkel. This one also has much larger temp swings (as expected).

If I go to the track I'm puttin on the stock intake with a modified snorkel. This one is mostly for show when I have the hood up. I'm a member of a car club at the university so now I can pop my hood with everyone else and have something to show off. Before my intake mod was a "below the radar" type of mod. I like how I can actually see the engine with this intake. The other one has a huge resonator that just about fills up the bay. I should mount some blue LEDs in the engine bay to light it up. I'm already thinking about putting blues in the fender wells since I'll probably take off the 4 overhead lights soon. The only thing stopping me right now is where I should mount the speakers where they are still easy to hear.

It may be slightly smaller but I betcha the smooth tube will flow air a lot better than the OEM tube.

Well it is an OEM tube just from an older truck. I just cut the resonator off. I guess I shouldn't be posting pictures considering that all I did was take the outter layers off to look better an make things a bit more fun. Does mechanical nudity have the same restrictions as human nudity?

In the words of Jeff Dunham, "Polish a turd and it is still a turd" but that doesn't mean you can't sell it as a new flavor of snicker bar!
