Question regarding trans/oil cooling

My Burb,like all ATs has cooling lines to the radiator but it also has engine oil lines to the radiator.I'm thinking those lines could be run to seperate coolers and eliminate the radiator.I have two aux. tranny coolers but no aux. engine oil cooler.Does the radiator cool the two oils or do the oils add to the radiator temp.Would the engine temp run lower if I eliminate the radiator? and if so does it make sense to do this? Right now it's near 100* almost on a daily basis and I know heat is a big killer of everything under the hood...

LOL! yes if you eliminated the oils being run through the radiator it will lower temps. The coolant acts as a coolant for the oils as well. if you put an aux for the oil with a fan, it would keep the oil cooler AND the radiator would be cooler.

the oils are being regulated by the tempurature of the coolant. so if you have a 195f stat your oils should regulate around there unless under severe service. i noticed a tremendous temperature drop in both engine oil and trans temp with a 160f stat

the problem with eliminating that loop is that there is no longer a regulated temperature, the auxillary cooler will cool as much as its designed too, on a cold day your oils may not be very viscous and cause a restriction, which can be bad news especially for a transmission. having the trans oil go through the radtiator alows the oil to warm as the engine warms, which prepares the trans for duty once you start driving, without the trans oil going into the rad the oil will be cool untill you start moving or sit for a long time.

I`d throw in a cooler stat and tune for it. easiest option and cheapest.

just dont go too low.. i had a 160 in my truck.. and on cold days it wouldnt get past 170 degrees on the coolant temp. and cold days in florida im talkin 40-50 degrees.

OK,let's say I leave the trans lines connected.But if I add an engine oil cooler to the system and leave 'em connected to the radiator will it help? What temp do you think the engine oil runs at? I already have a 180* thermostat in it.

you could run the cooler after the radiator to cool it down some more, oil temps typically run 180-200f+ depending on conditions, i probly wouldn`t want it too cool, maybe 30-50f lower than that. if the oil is too cool it doesn`t boil out moisture and it can cause the oil to get acidic which will cause rapid wear to bearings, (soft metals). it would be nice to keep trans oil to 150-180f, i know prior to my low stat it could reach 210f in high heat and towing conditions, it now seems to max out around 190f in those situations.

the best tempurature to keep engine oil is 180f, keeps away moisture and isn`t hot enough to break down.

Definately do not bypass the radiator altogether, not good for the transmission fluid to be too cool.

Another downside to cool oil and fluid temps is that it increases load on the engine. The oil will be more viscous at the cooler temps and will increase parasitic loss on the motor. This will affect your fuel economy.

160 deg. thermostats in my opinion are worthless. They just waste fuel. If your car overheats because of it's thermal load then you need a bigger or better radiator, not a thermostat.
