Do I need to change the oil in my 2009 Chevy Silverado every 3K miles or when my ONSTAR says it's at a certain percentage of its life?[

Most of us are running about 5000 miles between changes. I run synthetic in mine and change every 5000. The truck will tell you to change about every 7-8000 miles but I don't feel comfy going that long with mine.

I should mention that you certainly can't do any harm by changing sooner. Fresh oil is the life blood of your engine.

I run synthetic and I go by the Oil Life Monitor, to some degree. When my OLM gets to about 30% I changed it. It usually works out to about 6000-8000 miles.

I change mine at 30% on the OLM or every 5K, whichever comes first. Mobil 1 5w30, Wix filter.

In reality.. if you do not drive in harsh conditions all the time.. the oil monitor system on board your vehicle will be sufficent. The trucks on board modules monitor the way you drive your vehicle through throttle input, fluid temps, torque output, air conditions entering the engine etc etc... and decides when your oil should be changed. Ive sat through GM idl's... which are GM detriot interactive learning classes.. and they explain the whole system.. i was skeptical before but now i am confident on the system.. especially with the new trucks. And if you are on synthetic... absolutely no worries.
ON MY TRUCK i change every 3500 but thats because its got some miles on it, and its a highly modified truck.. as far as the lift, bigger rear end, etc etc.. and the engine works harder to move the truck.
