I should have started this last week but didn't think of it.

We got a little surprise coming home from our T'day weekend camp/ride outing in the desert.Just gettin on the freeway out of Mojave I look in my mirror and see a CHP with his lights on wanting me to pull over.WTF I said to wifey? She says ''what did you do?'',nothing I said.Pulled over, the officer says I have the wrong plate on my trailer.Huh? I said.''let me see your license'',I give it to him,he asks if I have the registration for the trailer,no,I say.Is it yours he says, yes it's mine.Evidently this type of trailer has to be licensed each year and have a new sticker every year.....didn't know that.So he gives me a ''fix-it'' ticket and leaves.Funny this hadn't come up before as this is an '03 model. So now I have until Jan. 28th. to get this remedied.

So my question is...how much is this likely to cost me? I have no clue how they rate the trailer....length? weight? axles? age? or all combined

It currently has a ''Permanent Trailer'' plate

Trailers here are subject to yearly registration but it's fairly inexpensive. Obviously, your mileage will vary because you are in another state. I do see trailers all the time with plates that are several years out of date!

No idea about how much it'll cost you but here in Indiana, ours are registered every year as well. For my boat trailer and single axle combined I bet I don't pay $75.

True, another question arises.I wonder why it was never registered correctly when it was brand new :dunno:

Anywhere between $50 & $75 doesn't sound too bad,but being Commiefornia I should get ready for a good screwing

In Texas, you get a permanent plate. You just get a new registration sticker each year. I'd bet that is how it works there.

Here is a link to the CA DMV that might allow you to do this online...

Yeah... and since you got a ticket for it, they know you've been using it. Just HOPE they don't make you go back and register it for all of those years that it wasn't properly registered! :uhoh:

NAH. They have no way of proving the trailer was used any time other than the time the officer saw you. The law is on YOUR side there.

See you boys later!

Here in NC it cost me around $15 a year for the tags on my little 5'x10' utility trailer. There are a ton I see with no tags on them but with my luck I would be the one to get caught and have to pay the fine. Also there are a ton of pig cookers that get towed behind vehicles as well with no tags but then they are a cooker not a trailer.
