This has been a week from hell for me at the shop. Here are 2 examples.
Installing a set of gears in a 2007 Mustang. The customer provides Ford Motorsports gears (first mistake). We install the gears and they have a whine on decel. I figure the backlash is wrong so I have the tech pull the cover and show me the pattern and backlash.. Pattern is perfect backlash is .010. . Rechecked preload - perfect.. Hmmm. Called FMS They say change the backlash to .014 and if the pattern is a little off it will be ok.. WTF?????? So we set up the gears per their specification and guess what, still whines on the backside and now it whines on the pull side too. Freaking awesome, so awaiting a call back from them.
A Mitsibushi Galant v-6 in the shop, customer had it towed in because its leaking oil so bad. We have to start at the valve covers because we can see it running out of those. Looks like someone replaced a bunch of gaskets on this motor, and love to use the cheap blue RTV on everything... We start disassembly of the car. The upper intake has to be removed to gain access to the rear valve cover. The tech puts his socket on one of the plenum bolts and it pops after very little pressure and just spins. So he pulls it out and its broken, but we did not break it. The person in before us broke it and instead of pulling the broken piece out of the lower intake he/she just glued in the top part of the broken bolt to make it appear it was installed.
I just thought you all could use a laugh at my expense on the crap we in the aftermarket auto industry deal with.
