Really didn't need this, but it's one of those deals that you wouldn't want to pass up ..

Came out of a low mileage 1988 motorhome ..

One of these days the old Binder going to have a 454 Big Block in it ... Eek !!

I checked on the block's casting numbers .. Same block that the 1990 454 SS trucks has, meaning most likely it has 4 bolt mains, soon to pull the pan for a look-see ...

GM did some wild stuff with the Gen IV Big Blocks ...
The casting number could be a two or four bolt block ?
Bout the only way to know for sure is to pull the pan ..

Found out something interesting about this motor ...
It could have four bolt main caps on a block that was drilled only for two bolts !!
Wouldn't be a biggie to drill & thread the other two outer holes in the block ...

It was a two bolt ...
Just as well cause I'm not planning to tach it past 5,500 rpm's ..

On the hunt for a set of 1973-up 049 oval port heads .. These have the hard seats, with a wee bit of port and bowl work, a slight increase in valve size might see around 550/600 HP ..
The motor came with peanut port heads, they are a alright head for a work vehicle, not so much a performance head ..
Dual plane intake, Holley 780 cfm vacuum secondary carb, long tube headers and a modest roller cam would be on the menu ..

I won't be in any hurry building it ... The 400 Mouse motor runs like day one ..

Onto another area of the build ... Wanting to get the firewall done ..
Laid down two coats of POR-15 on the inside ...

Working on the sound deadening matt under the cowl ..
Motor side is next to be worked ... It will see epoxy primer and bed liner ..

The dash is getting some finishing touches ..
Installing LED lights in the speedometer head ..

Hind of glad it wasn't ..
If it was a 4 bolt I'd be building into a hi-revving motor ..
Parts to do that kind of a build are expensive ...

And what the hell am I going to do with having 700+ HP on tap .. ?
(Find driveline parts to break .. ??)
... ...

Cool Beans ... Found a set of 049 heads ..
Their bare, no valves or springs ..
My plan is to use 11/32" stems and oversize the valve heads a little ..
Springs is matched to the Comp hyd flat tappet cam .. Would love to go roller, but after looking at prices decided not to ...

Simple maintenance parts are going through the roof. I can only imagine what high performance parts are costing these days.
