I'm driving my Dad's Yukon XL tonight and tomorrow till I can pick up my truck tomorrow from the shop. Dad said that the truck's speedometer has been sticking. He checked it with his Garmin GPS and said that it can be off from 5-15mph at times. I was coming into the neighborhood tonight and it said I was doing 40 and stuck there. No Possible way I could even do 40 in our neighborhood Is this a common problem? I know my roommate had to send his speedometer off in his work truck to a guy to fix it. But is there a simplier way to fix it? It's a 2005 GMC Yukon XL with the 5.3 V8 (I think) Thanks I'm not familiar with these new GMs.
It is common...the stepper motors in the gauge cluster in 800s are notorious for dying (right up their with the fuel sending unit). You can buy a new gauge cluster, send it off to get fixed, or try and find a "How-to" online.
You could try getting it re-flashed. Although the likely hood of it working are less than buying a new cluster.
Dad said he didn't wanna fool with all that shit, took it to the dealer and they charged him $400 to "fix" it I offered to do it for him
