Oh, I know all about the OLM in detail. Its a computer algorithm.:)

If you want to know all about it, I have the GM technical article that explains it in detail and can post it.

Normally I don't pay any attention to the OLM because I change oil once a yea,r no matter how many miles I put on the vehicles. If the OLM comes on before the year is up, I just reset it. I don't believe in 3,000 mile OCI.

Yes, i would like to see the article explaining the OLM...

Seems like you know alot about cars so ill ask you why dont you change your oil at 3K interval? Is it your oil you use or what? I like to hear info on this and id like to see a motor that has gone 5K per oil change interval or so get torn apart at like 100K miles and see what it looks like.. but you only change your oil once a year? Why? Not trying to be a smart ass i really wanna know...

AMSOIL states that you only have to change like every 15K or 12 months, whichever comes first.

I normally end up changing my oil once a year in my truck because that's about when I hit the 5000 mile mark. I really don't pay any attention to the OLM but it's normally at about 35% left.

Who is going to do that? It would take a lot of resources and $$$.

Because the 3,000 mile OCI is BS, its propaganda by the major oil companies to sell oil. Back in 1975 I stumbled upon AMSOIL being sold in a local gas station. I had been running Mobil 1 in my 1975 Chevy Blazer but it was hard to find as it was new. I was working all over and traveling many miles. Never had time to stop and change oil every month and going 25,000 miles w/o any oil change was something I could do and did. I figured so what if the engine tanked, I would just buy an new one. But the engine never tanked, it ran on and on using synthetic oil. While my co-worker was changing his oil every month (3,000) with his Pennzoil he was criticizing me for using synthetic oil. Yet his car was burning oil at 75,000 miles and mine was not at 100,000 miles. I have a 34 yr track record and I know it works. Since then its 25,000 miles or once a year although since I retired (early out in 02) I don't drive as much as I once did, between my 2 vehicles I put about 20,000 miles on them. I never had an engine that used oil and I put lots of miles traveling all over as a DOT Surveyor.

I just read this today, its new.
Driven by increasingly stringent emission and fuel economy standards, Toyota has informed its dealers that the company will begin requiring SAE 0W-20 synthetic motor oils in new Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles over the next several years. Other OEMs are expected to follow suit by 2011. Among the benefits cited by Toyota are enhanced protection at high and low temperatures, improved fuel economy and reduced engine deposits. In addition, Toyota is reportedly studying increasing oil drain interval recommendations to 10,000 miles.

As stated above, it cost money to do the comparison tests. Now most would say that the tests are rigged to show AMSOIL being better. One has to remember that those studies are published and if they were not fact the other oil companies could come back and sue AMSOIL for false information.

AMSOIL states that you can go 25k miles or one year on an oil change to include the filter if you use the AMSOIL EaO filter. That is for regular duty, severe duty is 15K miles or one year which ever comes first.

I have been changing the oil in my family members cars once a year for 5 years now. They love it. Not to mention it is a way to get them to visit. :)

3k miles is a marketing tool for big oil companies to make their big bucks. Today's oils can go a lot longer with no problems.

I have been an AMSOIL Dealer now for 9 going on 10 years and have never had any complaints. Changes out one customers oil on their 2004 Suburban with the 5.3 at his one year mark. The oil had 20k miles on it. I sent a sample in to get analyzed and it came back good for continued use.
