MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Boat owners are abandoning ship.

Brett Flashnick for The New York Times
Gary Santos, a Mount Pleasant, S.C., councilman, checks a state notice on a forsaken sailboat.
They often sandpaper over the names and file off the registry numbers, doing their best to render the boats, and themselves, untraceable. Then they casually ditch the vessels in the middle of busy harbors, beach them at low tide on the banks of creeks or occasionally scuttle them outright.

From my 20+ year career on the water I have learned one thing; Boats of any size are just holes in the water to pour money into.

I guarantee you all those water heads don't even know how to run, manage, or work on their boats. We have a lot of people around here (we are 1.5hours from MT. Pleasant) that just buy boats and they set in their yards! They think since they live near the water it's easy to have a boat and go out on the water.........WRONG

I work with a guy from Mt. Pleasant and just today he "jokingly" offered to give me his boat. He's one of those guys who owns it and knows nothing about it, so he's over it.
