Dakota tranny - Any truth to the legend?

I have been told that the tranny on the Dakota is worthless. Anybody had any experience with that?

But I might be able to ask my giant salvage company owning buddy if it is a turd. Those guys KNOW what is good and bad from a bazillion parts requests logged in the system. What engine size?

IIRC the 5 speed is better than the 4 speed. The 4 speed was converted from a FWD design. Felix can correct me if I am wrong.


I think I worked on 3 Dakotas in my lifetime.

I never worked on one....of those 3. The only ones I see problems with is the Rams with the Cummins up front, but thats a different story.
